CMS 105: Using Cost Report Data for Research

Workshop Design and Goals:

The workshop will focus on providing technical training in order to use Medicare cost report data for health services research, market research, or financial analysis. The workshop is designed for individuals that are new to using Medicare cost report information. The workshop format will include lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on computer work. By the end of the day, attendees will have downloaded the Medicare cost reports and created a custom analytical file containing the cost reports and variables necessary to answer each attendee’s specific study questions.

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:

  • Understand what a relational data base is and how this format will impact how the data can be manipulated.
  • Understand the content and significance of each supporting document relative to creating an analytical data file
  • Construct an analytical file containing the researcher’s specific variables of interest. This includes the ability to download the data files, link the files, and construct queries to pull out variables of interest.
  • Recognize the similarities between each of the five cost report data files and supporting documents and apply the knowledge and skills learned to any of the other cost report data files. Training will focus on Hospital cost reports, but the other 4 cost report downloads are structured in the same way with the same type of supporting documentation.

Audience:

Academic, Non-profit, For-profits. This training would be appropriate for analysts, programmers, or anyone actually working with the cost report data files.
